Next Level Log Handling – digital, electric, connected: Holtec redefines the sawmill

The German trade journal Holz-Zentralblatt reported in issue 26/2025 that, at Ligna, Holtec presented its vision of the “sawmill of the future”, based on comprehensive automation, digitalisation and electrified systems. Under the guiding theme Next Level Log Handling, the company showcased a holistic concept for the log yard and sawmill that combines efficiency, sustainability and improved working conditions. At the heart of this concept is the fully electric portal crane VPK LogHandler, developed jointly with partners. It is regarded as an alternative to diesel-powered handling machines and impresses with lower emissions, reduced operating costs and more compact and efficient storage logistics. The concept is complemented by systems such as Log Runner and Gap Control, which ensure a consistent material flow and increase throughput.

In addition, Holtec presented digital solutions for location-independent plant control. Using the Logpilot Pro management system, portal crane installations can be controlled over long distances, while simulators support operator training and simplify planning processes. A central role is also played by the AI-based system Edge AI, which analyses production processes using image and sensor data, makes automated decisions and optimises workflows. Applications range from the automatic detection of log characteristics to real-time monitoring of installations, thereby improving efficiency, quality and process stability.

All modules are integrated into a comprehensive overall system that extends from log logistics through to delivery of the final product. In addition, with Holtec Mobile Services, the company offers a digital service platform that allows maintenance, spare parts management and system monitoring to be organised via app or web. Remote maintenance using smart glasses is also part of the concept, enabling service operations to be carried out more quickly and efficiently.
Overall, according to the report, Holtec’s approach to connected, AI-supported and fully electric production provides important impetus for the future development of the sawmill industry and shows that the company remains well utilised despite challenging market conditions.
