State-of-the-art systems designed for the wood industry – the flood as an accelerator of innovation

In November 2024, the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reported that the machinery manufacturer Holtec, based in the Blumenthal district of Hellenthal, develops innovative systems for the wood industry and thereby contributes to the modernisation of the sawmill sector. The company plans and manufactures complex sawing lines and complete installations that are deployed at customer sites worldwide and can involve investments in the double-digit million range. According to Managing Director Alexander Gebele, key success factors include reliability and on-time project execution. Together with Managing Partner Ute Klement, he is driving the company’s strategic development forward.

Holtec is regarded as a “hidden champion” in its market segment and is, among other things, the global market leader in package cross-cut saws. Many sawmills in Central Europe rely on systems from the Eifel region. A major focus is on the digitalisation and automation of log logistics: large portal crane installations are intended to replace diesel-powered excavators in the future, reduce operating costs and help counter the shortage of skilled workers.

Despite a severe setback caused by the flood disaster, during which parts of the plant were damaged, Holtec was able to resume production after just six weeks. According to the report, the company’s innovations make a significant contribution to increasing efficiency and to the further development of the sawmill industry.
