Innovative feeding system
supplies the Linck high-capacity line.

High-performance feeding for 170 m of wood per minute

Baruth/Mark, located around 50 kilometres south‑east of Berlin, has been home to one of the most modern and efficient sawmills in Europe since 2022. Binderholz invested around 75 million euros in modernising and expanding the site. The heart of the facility is a high‑performance sawing line from Linck, through which up to 170 metres of wood pass per minute.

The system is designed for log diameters from 110 to 550 millimetres and lengths from 2.5 to 5 metres. In addition to high production performance, Binderholz places particular emphasis on the responsible use of the raw material wood – following the zero‑waste principle, the entire log is utilised in full.

Task

To ensure a reliable supply for the high‑performance sawing line, a powerful and precisely controlled feeding system was required. In addition to high conveying capacity, the exact timing of the logs had to be guaranteed above all.

A defined log gap is crucial for stable sawing operation. Depending on the product range and optimisation strategy, the logs must enter the sawing line with spacing between 30 and 150 centimetres. At the same time, the high line speed of up to 170 metres per minute demands particularly precise measurement and stable material guidance.

What was needed, therefore, was a feeding system that combines highest speed, precise gap control and maximum process reliability.

Solution

HOLTEC developed a powerful feeding concept with two parallel, identical lines. These provide maximum flexibility and ensure a continuous supply to the sawing line.

Log separation is carried out by step feeders and tandem feeders. The logs are then accelerated almost slip‑free to the required conveying speed by LogRunners with V‑rollers. Before measurement, a metal detector identifies any foreign objects in the wood.

To achieve precise measuring results even at high speeds, HOLTEC integrated a so‑called “stabilisation section”. Special flites stabilise the logs so that they pass through the measuring unit smoothly and without vibration. After measurement, logs containing metal or otherwise unsuitable material are automatically ejected.

A cross‑conveyor buffer compensates for any gaps and ensures an even material flow to the sawing line. Three consecutively arranged LogRunners combined with the HOLTEC GapControl system then take over precise gap control. The actual spacing between the logs is continuously measured and automatically adjusted to the required value.

Even at a conveying speed of 170 metres per minute, the system achieves an accuracy of around 10 centimetres – and at lower speeds even down to 5 centimetres.

The result is a highly precise and exceptionally powerful feeding system that ensures stable operation of one of Europe’s most modern high‑performance sawing lines.
