Large-diameter logs
in focus
New HOLTEC sorting line complements the
existing small-diameter log system.
At the Leoben site, Mayr‑Melnhof Holz operates several log‑sorting lines to supply the sawmill. One of the systems dated back to the 1990s and increasingly no longer met the requirements for performance, availability, and maintenance effort.
To future‑proof the log yard while ensuring seamless integration with the existing equipment, Mayr‑Melnhof Holz decided for a complete modernization of this sorting line – delivered by HOLTEC.
The existing sorting line was technically outdated and increasingly prone to malfunctions. The goal was to develop a modern system that integrates seamlessly into the existing infrastructure while meeting higher requirements for performance, efficiency, and wear resistance.
A particular focus was placed on processing larger log diameters. At the same time, the new line was to be closely interconnected with the existing small‑diameter log system to enable flexible distribution of logs between the lines.
Already during the planning phase, precise design work was essential. To identify potential bottlenecks at an early stage, HOLTEC relied on a comprehensive system simulation using real log data. This made it possible to optimally dimension material flows, buffer sizes, and accumulation capacities.
HOLTEC carried out the modernization of the sorting line in three construction phases. Most of the new equipment was installed in parallel with ongoing production, while the final connection to the existing infrastructure was completed during the summer maintenance shutdown. This minimized production downtime.
The core element of the new system is the low‑wear HOLTEC Chainless technology, which operates without conveyor chains and therefore significantly reduces maintenance requirements and operating costs. This technology has already proven itself in numerous reference projects and once again convinced the decision‑makers at Mayr‑Melnhof Holz.
The system is specifically designed for large‑diameter logs, while smaller dimensions continue to be processed on the existing small‑diameter line. Both lines are interconnected: if logs are measured on one line that are better suited for the other, they are automatically rerouted. This flexible concept ensures optimal utilization of both systems.
With the successful commissioning, Mayr‑Melnhof Holz in Leoben now operates a modern, powerful, and cost‑efficient sorting solution that is ideally aligned with the site’s future requirements.
