New short log sorting boosts
efficiency with minimal downtime.

Modernisation during ongoing operations

Task

The existing log yard at the Kirchner sawmill in Radstadt had reached its technical limits after more than three decades of operation. Performance, availability and process stability no longer met the requirements of a modern sawmill. The objective was therefore to implement a new short‑log sorting system that would increase capacity while sustainably improving working conditions.

The key challenge lay in the execution: the modernisation had to be carried out during ongoing operations, with a maximum permissible downtime of only four weeks. At the same time, the aim was to create a powerful, ergonomically optimised and future‑proof solution offering long‑term capacity reserves and seamless integration into existing production workflows.

This required not only technical expertise, but also precise planning, high flexibility during implementation and close coordination with the customer throughout all phases of the project.

Solution

HOLTEC, together with Norbert and Wolfgang Kirchner, developed a multi‑stage implementation concept that enabled the modernisation to be carried out without a full production shutdown. A new sorting line, including debarker, was first installed while the existing second line remained in operation. This was followed by the step‑by‑step dismantling and renewal of the old system. In this way, overall downtime could be limited to the required minimum. After just four months, the complete installation was fully operational.

The new short‑log sorting system features two parallel sorting lines with a total of 73 concrete boxes, providing high flexibility and sufficient capacity reserves. Two modern Ergo‑Control workstations allow operators to switch ergonomically between sitting and standing positions without compromising visibility. Technical features such as end‑trimming at both ends and a 90° turning table further enhance log‑quality assessment.

From the very beginning, future operators were closely involved in the project. This collaborative approach ensured that not only the technical aspects but also day‑to‑day practical requirements were taken into account in the best possible way.

Positive feedback from the management confirms the chosen path. In addition to the system’s technical performance, the robust construction, smoother and more consistent processes, and the transparent cooperation were particularly highlighted.

With this project, HOLTEC marks another milestone in Austria and reinforces its expertise in delivering efficient, ergonomic and process‑reliable modernisations – even during ongoing operations.
