France's largest oak sawmill upgrades to a new log handling system
Task
As part of a comprehensive investment programme exceeding 50 million euros, Groupe Ducerf – one of France’s most established and renowned hardwood specialists – planned the modernisation of its log handling operations at the Vendenesse‑lès‑Charolles site. The objective was to optimise the internal flow of raw materials, increase productivity and material quality, improve working conditions, and significantly reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.
The key challenges lay in handling heavy oak logs of up to nine metres in length and six tonnes in weight, as well as processing large diameters of up to 1.2 metres efficiently. At the same time, the new solution had to ensure maximum availability, extended maintenance intervals, and a future‑proof system design.
Solution
HOLTEC was commissioned to modernise the entire log-handling area thanks to its long-standing experience and proven reliability. The result is a high‑performance system featuring three short‑log infeed lines, including one line equipped with an integrated butt‑end reducer for processing large log diameters. Debarking is carried out by a Baljer & Zembrod system, after which the logs are transferred online directly to the sawmill.
The new log-handling solution enables a productivity increase of around 10–15%, driven by higher capacity, improved yard logistics and automated control. At the same time, optimised processes ensure cleaner debarking, reduced wear and lower maintenance requirements.
Sound‑insulated, air‑conditioned operator stations and ergonomic workplaces significantly improve working conditions. In addition, energy‑efficient processes and the reuse of debarking residues contribute to sustainability and circular‑economy principles.
With this investment, Ducerf strengthens its competitive position and, together with HOLTEC, sets the course for a modern, powerful and future‑proof log‑handling solution.
