Gamechanger in log handling

Implementation in record time

New portal crane in the Black Forest

Task

After a serious accident in March 2022, the existing cable‑gantry crane at Dold’s log yard suddenly went out of service. As it was essential for emptying the log boxes and feeding the sawing lines, a new handling concept had to be developed at short notice. The aim was once again to implement a rail‑mounted portal crane – but this time at the highest technical standard and with a clear focus on sustainable, efficient production processes. Initial considerations for a new log yard concept, including a modern portal crane, had already been initiated jointly by Dold and HOLTEC beforehand.

Solution

Thanks to the preliminary planning, a new concept could be implemented in record time. By the end of 2022, after only nine months of project planning, the first components were delivered, and final commissioning took place in March 2023 – despite supply‑chain challenges and ongoing operations.

The result is a modular, fully electric portal crane (“VPK Loghandler”) offering high performance and great flexibility. The portal crane features a wide gauge, a cross‑travelling trolley and a powerful, continuously rotating upper carriage with more than 9 t lifting capacity. The design enables high storage capacities and is prepared for a future extension of the crane runway.

By collaborating with experienced partners, maximum technical expertise was brought together. The new portal crane concept improves space utilisation, energy efficiency and operating and maintenance costs, while also opening up future opportunities for partial automation and intelligent control. As a result, Dold considers itself technologically and sustainably equipped for the future.

Holtec has been a long standing, tursted and strong partner for us, continually inspiring us with new and innovative ideas.
