More performance
for Riga

New sorting and feeding technology boosts
availability and utilisation to an entirely new level.

A site on the rise - future-proof technology for Riga

Latvia is one of Europe’s most forested countries, with around half of its land area covered by woodland. The region around Riga has been an important centre of the sawmill industry for decades. In Rumbula, the BSW Timber Group – part of the Binderholz Group since 2022 – operates a large mill that has been systematically modernised following the acquisition. The aim was to implement Binderholz’s high performance and quality standards in Latvia as well.

The long‑standing partnership between HOLTEC, BSW and Binderholz formed the foundation for this comprehensive modernisation project.

Task

The existing log‑handling system in Rumbula was technically outdated and no longer able to meet future performance requirements. What was needed was a modern sorting and feeding system that meets the high Binderholz standards, optimises raw‑material utilisation, and reliably supplies a high‑performance saw line.

A particular challenge lay in the very limited space available. At the same time, the system had to achieve high sorting capacities, enable precise quality classification, and ensure a stable, continuous supply of material. In addition, the entire log yard was to be brought up to the latest infrastructural standards.

Solution

HOLTEC developed a customised plant concept that combines efficiency, precision and flexibility. By integrating a turntable, the sorting line could be angled by 90° – a space‑saving solution that enables a high‑performance layout even under tight spatial constraints.

To ensure optimal quality assessment, a generous rolling zone was created, allowing the logs to be fully inspected. With a capacity of up to 30 logs per minute, the sorting system sets new benchmarks. The process is complemented by a powerful VK8000HD debarker with double rotor, which operates reliably even at high feed speeds.

The sawmill infeed was also completely renewed. A 180° curved conveyor turns the logs butt‑end first into the line while simultaneously serving as a buffer. Combined with the HOLTEC LogRunner and the GapControl system, it delivers a constant minimal gap – ensuring maximum utilisation and stable processes.

As part of the project, the entire log yard was modernised: asphalted surfaces, a new sprinkler system and a contemporary infrastructure now provide optimal conditions for storage and logistics.

The result is a high‑performance, future‑proof site that brings together the traditions of the Latvian wood industry with the standards of a European market leader.

As Inesis Argalis, Commercial Director at BSW, confirms:
“The new infeed system has noticeably improved the sawmill’s availability and performance.”
