Two portal cranes, one vision – and an important milestone for the modern wood industry: In Harperscheid/Schleiden, a technically and symbolically significant step was taken in mid-November. On the wood&energy site, two electrically powered VPK LogHandler gantry cranes were successfully “married” – in other words, aligned with millimetre precision and connected to the handling machine. For the HOLTEC project team on site, it was an impressive moment that showcased precision, teamwork, and engineering excellence.
A Flagship Project for the Region
The new log yard, realised by HOLTEC in partnership with wood&energy, is among the most important industrial investments in the Eifel in recent years: around €25 million is being invested in state-of-the-art technology, regional value creation, and sustainable wood processing.
The project’s objectives:
- Replacement of three existing log yards with one central high-tech facility
- Use of two electric portal cranes – quiet, efficient, climate-friendly
- Increase in storage capacity from 35,000 to 60,000 cubic metres
- Secure supply despite strong seasonal fluctuations
- Politics and business have praised this commitment – the Euskirchen district calls it a “flagship company of the wood industry”.
A clear step towards the ‘Sawmill of the Future’
With its electrified and highly advanced log yard, wood&energy is embracing technologies that will shape the future of the industry:
- Significant CO₂ reduction and virtually silent operation
- Stable, optimised material flows
- Relief for employees through safe and automatable processes
- A foundation for digitalisation, remote operation, and AI-driven optimisation
- The installation in Harperscheid demonstrates how tradition and high-tech can come together – and that the sawmill of the future is no longer just a vision, but is already emerging.
The beginning of a new era
With the imminent commissioning of the two VPK portal cranes, wood&energy is entering a new phase. A project that not only strengthens the company but also the entire region – and supports the wood industry on its path towards a sustainable future.
